TRAINING & TIMER SETTINGS

Boxing round timer settings: choose your format

Start with the purpose of the session. A match-style clock rehearses a specific round format; a bag or pad timer organizes a training task. They can use the same round length without needing the same round count.

Choose the competition format first

UFT’s professional presets use three-minute rounds and one-minute breaks, with four, six, eight, ten or twelve rounds. Its women’s professional championship preset uses ten two-minute rounds. The World Boxing Federation publishes title formats with those distinctions.

The app’s elite amateur preset is three three-minute rounds. Do not use the two-minute women’s professional preset as a rule for women’s elite amateur boxing: World Boxing’s elite event guidelines use three-minute rounds. Junior and other divisions need their own format.

Match the timer to the task

For a solo bag session, start with Heavy Bag: six three-minute rounds with one-minute breaks. Shadow Boxing is three rounds at that rhythm and includes spoken combinations. Pad Work is five rounds with combo calls, which you can switch off when the pad holder is directing the session.

Choose a task before each round so the bell marks a useful change. You might repeat one combination, practice an exit after each exchange or concentrate on footwork. Change the round count when you need a shorter session; you do not have to use twelve rounds because the sport is boxing.

Count the breaks correctly

Six rounds of three minutes contain eighteen minutes of work. Five one-minute breaks bring the sequence to 23 minutes. There is no sixth break after the last round. Preparation, warm-up and cooldown add time independently.

Set a warning cue if you want a signal near the end of a round, and check the sound with your usual music playing before training. For sparring, agree the work duration, task and intensity with your coach.
