MMA round timer settings

An MMA round can move from striking to clinch work, a takedown and ground control without a new bell. A timer helps you keep those transitions inside one work period. Use a match-length preset when practicing pacing, or shorter rounds when the session concentrates on one position or transition.

MMA round format

UFT’s UFC Standard preset uses three five-minute rounds; UFC Championship uses five five-minute rounds. Both have one-minute rest between rounds. ONE’s published MMA format also uses three five-minute rounds, or five for world championship bouts, with one-minute breaks. The app’s Amateur preset uses three three-minute rounds; amateur rules depend on the organizer and division.

Work time and session time are different

Three five-minute rounds contain 15 minutes of work, but the two one-minute breaks make a full timer sequence 17 minutes. Five rounds contain 25 minutes of work and four minutes of rest, for 29 minutes. Preparation adds time before the first round. Comparing those totals is more useful than saying a bout is simply 15 or 25 minutes long.

These settings come from the app’s timer library. Rest is between work periods; the timer finishes after the last work period. Preparation is separate. Custom timers can change the count, work time and rest.

Choose a timer for your training

Choose Cage Rounds for shorter, repeated practice periods, such as entering the clinch and returning to open space. Shadow MMA adds spoken combinations that include strikes and shots. The Sparring preset supplies five-minute rounds, but its five-round count is a configurable training template. Set the actual tasks, partners and contact level with your coach.
