TRAINING & TIMER SETTINGS

How long are MMA rounds? Work time, rest and training

A standard professional MMA work period is five minutes, but that number does not describe the entire session. You also need the round count, the breaks and any preparation before the first bell.

Three rounds or five rounds?

UFT has a UFC Standard preset with three five-minute rounds and a UFC Championship preset with five. Both use one-minute breaks. ONE’s published MMA rules also specify three five-minute rounds for standard bouts and five for world championship bouts.

That means different promotions can share a clock pattern even when other rules differ. Select timing from the bout format rather than assuming every promotion requires a different timer.

Fifteen minutes of work is a seventeen-minute sequence

Three five-minute rounds give you fifteen minutes of work and two minutes of rest. Five rounds give you twenty-five minutes of work and four minutes of rest, for twenty-nine minutes. Those totals exclude preparation, warm-up, cooldown and any manual pauses.

When planning a class, reserve the total sequence rather than only its work time. The timer finishes after the last work period, so there is no trailing one-minute break.

Shorter rounds for a specific drill

The app’s Amateur preset uses three three-minute rounds. Amateur divisions and organizers vary, so check the actual rules for a planned bout. Cage Rounds uses six three-minute intervals as a training template, while Shadow MMA adds spoken strikes and shots.

A shorter task can focus on entering a clinch, returning to the feet or moving between striking and a shot. It does not need to simulate an entire bout. Choose the session’s objective with your coach, then edit the count and rest to suit it.
