Karate · ROUND LENGTHS & TRAINING USES

Karate kumite timer settings

Karate kumite practice can use either one bout clock or repeated sparring rounds. A single clock helps rehearse a competition format. Repeated rounds organize a class so partners know when to rotate. UFT includes both approaches and labels the age-category presets separately.

Karate round format

The WKF Kumite Senior preset is one three-minute work period. Cadet / Junior is one two-minute work period. Neither schedules rest inside the bout, and both carry a points scoreboard setting. WKF rules describe effective fighting time: pauses called by the referee are not simply a continuous countdown. Match practice should pause and resume accordingly.

Effective time versus elapsed time

A three-minute clock can take longer than three minutes on the wall if it is stopped for referee calls. That is different from a continuous three-minute training round. Decide which you are practicing before you start. Use a single match preset with manual pauses for a simulated bout, or repeated Kumite Rounds when the coach wants a fixed work-and-reset rhythm.

These settings come from the app’s timer library. Rest is between work periods; the timer finishes after the last work period. Preparation is separate. Custom timers can change the count, work time and rest.

Training formats

Kumite Rounds

6 × 2:00 / 0:30 rest

Six two-minute training rounds with thirty-second breaks. A repeated class template rather than one continuously timed competition bout.

Choose a timer for your training

Kumite Rounds uses six two-minute rounds with thirty-second breaks. Those breaks give you time to change partners or restate the drill. For technical practice, choose a specific entry or defensive response and keep the task consistent through the work period. Kata practice does not use the same bout structure; create a custom practice timer around the segments your instructor wants to rehearse.

  1. Open the timer library in UFT and select Karate.
  2. Choose the named preset that matches the session. For a different sequence, create or customize a timer in My Timers.
  3. Check the round count, work and rest. Set preparation, warnings and optional warm-up or cooldown before starting.

Karate timer questions

How long is a karate kumite bout?

UFT includes a three-minute senior preset and a two-minute cadet/junior preset. Confirm the applicable category and rules; effective bout time can include clock stoppages.

Is the thirty-second training break part of WKF kumite?

No. The break belongs to UFT’s repeated Kumite Rounds training template. The single-bout competition-style presets do not schedule rest inside the bout.
